When you have shooting pain travelling down your leg or a sharp ache radiating into your arm, it can be terrifying. This type of nerve pain often stems from spinal disc issues. At Paragon Physiotherapy Centre, we use the highly acclaimed McKenzie Method to safely "centralize" and eliminate this radiating pain, putting the power of recovery directly into your hands.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR TREATMENT

What is the McKenzie Technique?

The McKenzie Method, also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), is a specialized assessment and treatment protocol for spine and extremity pain. Rather than relying on passive machines, MDT uses a series of specific, repeated movements to identify your "directional preference"—the exact movement that rapidly reduces your pain. Once identified, this movement becomes your personalized treatment tool.

Personalised movement-based treatment MDT identifies the movement that best reduces your pain and makes it part of your treatment plan.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does 'Centralization' mean?
Centralization is the goal of the McKenzie Method. It means the pain moving down your leg or arm retreats back toward the center of your spine. Even if the pain in your spine temporarily increases, the retreat from the limb means the nerve compression is reducing, which is a highly positive sign.
Is MDT just about bending backward?
No. While many lower back issues respond well to extension (bending backward), the McKenzie assessment tests all directions. Your treatment might require bending sideways or forward, depending entirely on what your unique mechanics dictate.
Will I need an MRI before starting?
Usually, no. The McKenzie physical assessment is often more accurate at determining the mechanical cause of your pain than an MRI, which only shows a static picture of your anatomy.
Does the treatment involve cracking my back?
No. The McKenzie Method focuses on repeated, patient-generated movements. Spinal manipulation is only used rarely if the self-generated movements are not quite enough to achieve the result.
Can the McKenzie Method help if I've had spine surgery in the past?
Yes, in many cases it can still be highly effective. However, a thorough clinical assessment is required first to ensure the repeated movements are completely safe for your specific surgical history.
How often will I need to do the McKenzie exercises at home?
To see rapid results and centralize the pain, your physiotherapist will usually instruct you to perform your specific pain-relieving movement multiple times a day, often every couple of hours.
