Book an Appointment

Have you ever woken up with a "crick" in your neck, or bent over to pick something up and felt your back completely lock up? When your joints lose their natural glide, the surrounding muscles instantly spasm to protect the area, causing severe, sharp pain. At Paragon Physiotherapy Centre, our precise joint mobilisation and manipulation techniques are designed to safely unlock these restricted areas, providing rapid and lasting relief.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR TREATMENT

What is Mobilisation & Manipulation?

Mobilisation and manipulation are manual therapy techniques used to restore normal movement to stiff or painful joints.

Mobilisation Involves slow, rhythmic, and graded movements applied to a joint to gently stretch the surrounding capsule and ligaments.
Manipulation A fast, highly controlled, and precise thrust applied to a joint (often accompanied by a "popping" sound) designed to instantly restore range of motion and relieve nerve pressure.

YOUR APPOINTMENT

What to Expect During Your Session

01

Thorough Safety Screening

We assess your joint mechanics, nerve function, and medical history to ensure manipulation is 100% safe for you.

02

The Technique

Depending on your restriction, we apply either gentle, rhythmic rocking (mobilisation) or a quick, targeted adjustment (manipulation).

03

Follow-Up Exercises

We prescribe specific stretches to maintain the newly gained movement and prevent the joint from locking up again.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the 'popping' sound during a manipulation?
The sound is called a cavitation. It is simply the release of a tiny gas bubble (nitrogen) from within the joint fluid when the joint is stretched. It is not your bones cracking or rubbing together, and it is completely safe.
Does manipulation hurt?
The procedure itself is very fast and usually painless. Many patients feel immediate relief. You may experience mild muscular soreness later in the day as your body adjusts to the new, correct posture.
Is manipulation the same as seeing a chiropractor?
While both professions use manipulation, physiotherapists use it as just one tool within a broader treatment plan. We combine manipulation with massage, dry needling, and specific strengthening exercises to ensure the problem is fixed long-term, rather than relying on endless adjustments.
Is manipulation safe for everyone?
No. We do not use manipulation on pregnant women, individuals with severe osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, or specific spinal cord issues. In these cases, we use gentle, safe mobilisations instead.
Is joint manipulation safe for my neck?
Yes, when performed by a highly trained physiotherapist following a rigorous medical and safety screening. We only use neck manipulations when it is the absolute safest and most effective option for your condition.
Will I need manipulation at every appointment?
No. Manipulation is used to initially unlock the joint. Subsequent sessions usually focus more on strengthening and stabilization exercises so the joint doesn't lock up again.
